Forms: datta, data, dathta

adj io-iā, datta, data, late MSS also dathta (daththa 23 N 15, 164. 13 , 18th century MS); rhymes with brecnata SR 3933 , dínerta, ib. 2831 , bratta, IT iii 68. 15 , curata, LL 394. 3 , saṁradhta, 23 N 15, 129. 8 , fata, MacCarthy 206. 5 ; LL 129 b 21 ; 157 a 9 . COMP. dattu, rhyming with maccu, LL 142 a 12 ; datta, Laws v 274. 21 .—dattae has the appearance of an adj. deriv. of 1 dath or of a past pc. of dathaid; but apparently the feeling of its connection with dath was early lost, as the marked divergence in meaning shows. For semantic development see Études Celt. xxxv 168 . Apart from the phrase `is dattae lim' (already Wb. 8 a 6 ), it mostly occurs in chevilles and stereotyped phrases, very often, as it seems, introduced to alliterate with a neighbouring noun in d-. It seems mainly a literary word, used by Mid.-Ir. writers in the vague sense of súairc and cáin, by which it is occasionally replaced even in comparatively old MSS (Rawl.).
