conj. (prep. ré + d s. pron. síu) lit. `before this', hence as temp. conj. before . In later Ir. re- is dropt.

(a) in O.Ir. followed by (usually with -ro- or equivalent) subj.: molid resíu ro cursacha he praises before he blames , Wb. 4a2 . dofoídid resíu rís-sa send (him) before I arrive , 14a17 . robtar irlithi . . . resíu tised hiress before the faith came , 27c8 . amal rumboi a n-aesaerge do cholain Crist risiu adcheth druailned, Ml. 38c9 (lenition of vb. irregular, see Thurn. Hdb. § 500 ). dochum . . . inna loc hi ro batar riam cid resiu dondichsitis asin doíri, 104c5 (rel. -n- irreg.).

(b) in Mid.Ir. the subj. mood is used after resiu to express an action future or contingent in relation to the vb. of the main clause, e.g. after an imp. or pres. or fut. tense: resiu tias don bith buidhi | beir uaim uili cech n-eccoir before I go , Ériu iii 31.8 . marbaid in fer resiu dech uain, Death-tales of the Ulster heroes 38 z. tabair usce dún resíu marbai sínd before thou killest us , PH 2333 . riasiu tīs do ṡaicarbaic | coibsen leire do nertad, ZCP vii 311 § 17 . benaid-sium a chend riasiu sessed do chum talman, TBC-LL¹ 1294 (= rainic talmain, St.). rofhitir bar n-athair . . . cid riasíu dognéthi a atach, PH 7843 . resiu .i. inni is taisecha, ut est fogella risiu imgona, O'Dav. 1403 . riasíu rister forcend peinne, RC xv 488 § 6 .

(The indic. is rarely used in such cases: nom-díultfa-sa anocht . . . resíu goires in coilech, PH 3196 . marbaid missi . . . resiu faicfi me sunda before [the Cyclops] sees me , Aen. 149 (`rather than leave me here', Calder)). foceird a bunsuig . . . riasiu dofaethsat [leg. -sad] for talmain nus-gabed [leg. -gaibet] na secht milcoin, ZCP iv 34.8 (TBFr. Eg.) = síu cotrí ri talmain, LL 248b17 ( TBFr. 138 ) = riasiu conrí co talmain, YBL ( ib. 16.9 ).

(c) the indic. is used when the action of the follg. vb. is already past, the vb. in the main clause being in pret. or perf. tense: atchualatar a fherta resíu rosiacht, PH 534 . co mba marb . . . riasíu ránic a thech, 2478 . co riacht a thech resiu ro ba matin, Death-tales of the Ulster heroes 40.12 . ro thomail C. ní don fleid résiú ro beannaighedh hí before it was blessed , MR 28.4 .

The subj. is rare in such cases: nat ro bai talam . . . riasiu asrobrath no beitis duile before He said that the elements should exist , Ériu ii 104 § 15 . ro bae Eabra . . . la Fenius rias[i]u tissad on Scithia, Auraic. 28 . ba sai . . . cid siu tisad a tuaid even before he came , 387 = cidh riesiu, 2471 (YBL).
