inflection are against analysis as deriv. of álaic (cf. Desid.
30Gloss.) though the rhyming exx. ( Met. Dinds. iii 62.107 and
bardic verse passim) indicate long á-. The length-mark is not
usual in early exx., and Thurn. Heldensage 69 , on the basis
of Corm. Y 62 , takes as compd. of 2 ail and geis `Schimpf-

' (note that geis in general sense of request is poorly
