19c11 . atchomaing, 24c16 (with inf. pron.). ad-comaicc,
40 BDD² 1475 . See Thurn. Gr. p. 354 . Prot. -ecmaic, -ecmaing,
used in Mid. Ir. in absolute position in sense (b) below.
?Pass. ecmaiṅger, Ériu vii 6.21 = -ecmongar, 199.7 (in
sense of con-icc?). ? Impf. 3 s. adcoimced, LU 7993 ( = ad-
comaicc, BDD² 1528 ). adcoimged, O'Mulc. 578 ( = adcomced,
45 Rawl. 108b 37 ). Subj. pres. 3 s. -ecm(a)i, -ecma, Wb. 5b35 ,
Ml. 15d5 , LU 5855 . Later adchomga, Ériu vii 168.8 . -ecmonga,
ii 122 § 62 . pret. and perf. are not distinguished, the most
usual form being the 3 s. ad-comnaicc with inf. pron. as verb
of existence (see (b) below). Apart from this construction
50special pret. forms occur mainly in the sense strikes , which is
not found in the vn. ecmong (see (a) below). In the other
meanings the pres. is frequently used as a historic tense
(cf. Études Celt. iii 232 ). pret. 3 s. ad-comnaicc ( happened ),

Vn. ecmong.
There are two meanings, (a) strikes (trans.), (b) happens . As
prot. -ecmaic -ecmaing and vn. ecmong are found only in
sense (b), and the s-pret. (found in O. Ir. glosses) only in
65sense (a) there may have been two distinct compound verbs. See, however, MU² 1049 and Ériu v 242.153 cited below under (a).
But sense (b) could have arisen from sense (a), where, on the
other hand, a compd. of icc could have been influenced by or
conflated with boingid or a compd. thereof. Treated as one
vb. by Ped. (ii 555) and Thurn. ( Gramm. 354 ).
