In sentences of the type (a) ansu liumsa ind oís anechtir dia fius it is more grievous to me that the outland folk should know it, Wb. 16d12 (where ind oís is virtual subject of the vn.) and (b) ní date leu in coimdiu do crochad it is not agreeable to them that the Lord was crucified (lit. to crucify the Lord), 8a6 (where in coimdiu is virtual object of the vn.), the O.Ir. construction is identical; in both sentences the case of the nouns oís , coimdiu is determined by their syntactical relation to the whole sentence, that of subject, while do + vn. stands in syntactical relation not to the whole sentence but to the noun, its function being that of a gerund. Similarly in the sentence: cocarad chaingnimu du denum he loved to do good deeds, Ml. 14a8 , the subst. caingnímu is the object of the sentence while du denum has the meaning for the doing, to be done. Exceptions are, however, frequent, see below. In each of the sections 1-4 the subsection (a) consists of exx. where the subst. is the virtual subject of the vn., (b) of exx. where it is the virtual object.
