ORIGIN: Gen. dechnada (never dechanta) points to a cpd.; cf. the u- stems cétnad, sétnad (occasionally eclipsing like dechnad: cétnad nimrinn, IT iii 53 § 97 n. 1 . c. naisi, ib. § 98 . setnad mbecc, ib. 20. 13 ). The original meaning of dechnad being obscure, no certain etymology can yet be given. Possibly a cpd. of deach `verse-foot, &c.' with nath .i. ainm coitchenn dona huilib aistib, Corm. (u- stem: LL 386 a 8 . BB 302 b 4 . 303 b 42 , and probably masc.). Dech- cpd. form of deäch as ern- of iarn.
