Cf. fortus.
In Mid.Ir. MSS forru (forro, forthu, etc.) and foraib are
often found without distinction of case. In the Laud-Lismore text of Acall. pretonic for is very rare; it is
regularly replaced by ar. But with suff. pron. 3 s. m. n.
fair is predominant; there are very few instances of air.
In the other pronominal forms those with and without
f- seem to share the field equally.
In classical verse the pretonic form is AR, but the pronominal forms are regularly those of FOR without f. an
exception is orat, orad (beside ort). Cf. O. Ir. airiut, erut
from AR. See 24 P 8 (McKenna, Tracts).

The uses illustrated, respectively, in the two sections
following are not always easy to distinguish. The principal
difference is that (k) usually expresses passivity rather
than activity. Some of the exx. there might possibly be
assigned to (j), while in (l) action, purpose is implied. For
later exx. see 1 AR, where the absence of lenition in these
uses betrays the original prep.
