v Thurneysen ( GOI § 548 ) regards 1 seinnid and 2 seinnid as two separate vbs. Pedersen Vgl. Gr. (§ 819 Anm.) is inclined to regard them as one verb (orig. sense sonare). Plummer, MS. notes, also takes this view, suggesting `strikes' as the original meaning. If this is so 1 seinnid would originally have been applied to stringed or percussion instruments but has spread to wind instruments also. The inflection so far as it occurs is the same.
