I In meaning of Lat. testis, a witness, one capable of giving evidence . This is presumably the original sense in Irish, but Thurneysen, Cóic Con. Fug. 68 § 19 explains this meaning in the Laws as a development from the more usual one = Lat. testimonium, taking teist as a collective `witnesses': tri fira testa `drie (Klassen von) Schwüren der Zeugnisfähigen,' Cóic Con.
